Next Tuesday, June 9th CCAN will take a break from organizing for a night to honor some of Maryland’s clean energy and climate champions.
We have a lot to celebrate this year – passing the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act, seeing movement to cap carbon at the national level and through the EPA. While we still have a lot of work ahead of us, it’s important to celebrate the victories along the way.
So…we’ve put together a great party. We’ve got excellent food, beer, wine, and live jazz lined up. Plus an excellent list of honorees.
You can reserve your tickets at www.chesapeakeclimate.org/mdaward.
Reserve them by 5pm tomorrow and you can bring a friend for half price. Don’t miss out!
Our award winners range from a U.S. Congressman to a local climate activist. Even the lists of hosts is impressive: Bill McKibben, Energy Action’s Jessy Tolkan and Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin join the long list of those hosting the event.
We are proud to present award to the followed guests:
Congressman Chris Van Hollen (MD District 8 ) has achieved many clean energy successes in his six years in Congress. He is co-chair of the House Renewable Energy and Efficiency Caucus. He has led the fight for establishing a national “Green Bank” to simulate investment in clean energy. And, to fight global warming, he introduced in April the historic and much-praised legislation called “The Cap and Dividend Act of 2009.”
State Senator Paul Pinsky (Dist. 22) and Delegate Kumar Barve (Dist. 17) were lead sponsors this year of the strongest climate bill ever passed by a U.S. state: the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act of Maryland. For years, they have led the fight for a wide range of bills designed to promote clean energy and ecological sustainability in Maryland.
Councilmember George Leventhal has achieved many clean energy successes in his six years on the Montgomery County Council in Maryland. He pioneered the campaign to switch county government buildings — including schools — to 10 percent wind power. He launched the “Clean Energy Reward” program for county residential purchases of clean energy. And he has been an unshakable leader in the fight for the Purple Line light rail system in the county.
Betsy Taylor has dedicated her remarkable career to promoting social justice and environmental stewardship. She founded and served as director of The Center for a New American Dream. In 2007 she founded and now serves on the board of the nationally active 1Sky campaign. She’s also an author and has worked with a wide range of philanthropies to guide resources to good causes, especially climate protection.
Jennifer and Ted Stanley have for many years been leading supporters of environmental protection – including strong action on climate change – through their philanthropy, the Town Creek Foundation located in Easton, Maryland.
