Charitable IRA Distributions

Support climate action through your IRA

This is a unique giving opportunity for supporters 70½ years old and older to be able to donate to CCAN by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA). A QCD is a direct, tax-free transfer of funds from an IRA to a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity. Using QCDs can also satisfy a donor’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) once they reach the age of 73. An individual donor can contribute up to $111,000 per year in QCDs. For married couples, each spouse can make QCDs up to the limit for a potential total of $222,000.

A QCD is made as a direct transfer to a charity, never passing through the hands of the IRA holder. The IRA custodian can either send an electronic transfer of funds or a check directly to the charity. For a QCD to count toward a minimum annual IRA distribution, it must be made by the same deadline as a normal distribution, which is usually Dec. 31 of the tax year in question.

To donate to Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) through your IRA, provide your IRA custodian with our information below to begin the process. If you have questions, we suggest you reach out to your tax advisor.
