When the company that puts out 55% of Virginia’s industrial greenhouse gas emissions tries to leave pollution out of the picture, Wonder Wind and some intrepid CCANers show up on the scene to set the record straight!

This past weekend at Dominion Riverrock in Richmond, corporate sponsors including Dominion Virginia Power presented an outdoor event featuring concerts, sports, and green initiatives. Festival participants were in danger of being fooled! Who would make it clear that Dominion has no plan to invest in wind and solar for the next 15 years?

CCANers were there to make sure Dominion didn’t pull one over on their customers. The volunteer team collected over 100 petitions asking the state’s biggest electricity provider to build real renewable energy in Virginia. We talked about Dominion’s Green Power program and challenged the folks we met to think carefully about where money in the program really goes, and we encouraged Dominion customers not to enroll until 100% of the energy in the program comes from Virginia-generated wind and solar. For the sake of creating thousands of jobs in a Virginia wind industry, cutting pollution in Virginia, and stabilizing electricity prices in the long term, we need to build it here!

It is easy to see from the signs worn by our volunteers that CCANers won’t let Dominion continue to drive climate change and keep us on a path toward hotter heat waves, stronger storms, and accelerating sea level rise. Virginia can be a leader in clean energy, but it will take real planning and action by our largest electric utility, not just words and gestures.
