BREAKING: Pelosi/Reid call to switch Capitol Power Plant off of coal!

From It’s Getting Hot in HereBreaking news – and the organizing hub for the Capitol Climate Action is lit up right now!Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just made an announcement moments ago – calling to switch the Capitol Power Plant entirely off of coal! Just 4 days before thousands of people are mobilizing at the facility for the largest act of civil disobedience in US history for the climate – this statement shows the power of grassroots action!cca-table-bannerThe Capitol Power Plant has been controversial for years – as an antiquated, inefficient facility that is the largest source of the pollution in Washington DC. While efforts to clean up the plant and switch off its usage of coal have been attempted for years (including by Pelosi and the Greening the Capitol Initiative), powerful coal state interests (namely Senators Mitch McConnell and Robert Byrd) have blocked attempts to end it’s usage of coal. This plant symbolizes the stranglehold coal has over our climate, our environment, our communities, and our political process. In the past 2 weeks, the Capitol Climate Action Coalition (made up of over 100 organizations from across the country) sent letters to Congress, informing them of our intent for peaceful action March 2nd at the Capitol Power Plant that is  reflecting the urgency and seriousness of the climate crisis.  And as the media buzz and public interest grows for this historic mobilization – we are flexing out political muscles, showing that people are demanding real change in our climate and energy policies. As Pelosi and Reid accurately noted:

Taking this major step toward cleaning up the Capitol Power Plant’s emissions would be an important demonstration of Congress’ willingness to deal with the enormous challenges of global warming, energy independence and our inefficient use of finite fossil fuels. We strongly encourage you to move forward aggressively with us on a comprehensive set of policies for the entire Capitol complex and the entire Legislative Branch to quickly reduce emissions and petroleum consumption through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean alternative fuels.

This statement today by Pelosi and Reid shows the power of grassroots movements to spur our leaders into action. As Congressional leaders are recognizing that better solutions exist for their own backyard – we must keep the pressure up to ensure that coal is phased out across the country, and replaced with clean, renewable, just solutions that solve the climate crisis, and support our communities.Thousands of you are already planning to join us March 2nd in DC – to make sure that our message is not simply about cleaning up one facility – but about climate justice for all.  We still have non-violence trainings  all weekend, and for people choosing to peacefully engage in civil disobedience or participate in the support rally -you can still  join us in keeping this momentum up! James Hansen joins voices calling for action

“I think it’s time we take a stand on global warming,” says James Hansen in this video calling on all of us to take part in the March 2nd civil disobedience on Capitol Hill. Just days after the Washington Post reported that the pace of global warming is likely to be much faster than recent predictions, the scientific community is calling on all of us to ramp up our efforts.

Join us on March 2 as we participate in the largest civil disobedience on global warming in history.

Prayer Vigil for Capitol Climate Action

ghandiOn March 2, a mass action will occur at the coal-fired power plant that brings energy to Capitol Hill, bringing attention to coal’s contribution to the climate crisis and its threat to the health of future generations. The Capitol Climate Action, www.capitolclimateaction.org, represents the beginning of a mass mobilization for climate justice and energy solutions.

Participants engaging in civil disobedience at the coal plant are committing themselves to practice the nonviolence principles of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Just as the civil rights movement was rooted in nonviolence, much was inspired and sustained by the faith community. In keeping with this tradition the Capitol Climate Action will be preceded by a prayer vigil offering an opportunity for people of various faiths to offer prayers for the success of this action and calling upon their spiritual resources to ground them in this important work for a cleaner, brighter, future for all of creation, in what Dr. King would call “the fierce urgency of now.”

The Prayer Vigil will occur at the staging area for the action, at Spirit of Justice Park (about three blocks from the coal plant), C St. SE & New Jersey Ave. SE (two blocks west of Capitol South Metro), from 12:30 to 1 pm, on Monday March 2. Banners from worship communities are welcome.

The buzz around the Capitol Climate Action is hot! The action has over 60 endorsing organizations and over 1500 people are registered and willing to risk arrest. It’s taken on a life of its own

We've made it big! Hollywood star lends support to the Capitol Climate Action

The support for the Capitol Climate Action on March 2 is growing. With over 1500 people signed up, this will be the largest act of civil disobedience on global warming ever to tell Congress to solve the climate crisis now. And now, Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon has lent her voice in our support.

She joins our list of endorsers, including country singer Kathy Mattea, who will be singing at our March 1st event with Wendell Berry.

Check out this video with Sarandon, encouraging people to join us on March 2. She evokes the sacrifices of Ghandi and Martin Luther King in calling on Americans to join us as we demand a more equitable and peaceful future free from climate chaos.

Calling all Hybrid Car Drivers!

Let’s have a parade Dec. 5th to tell Detroit: No bailout without clean cars!

hybrid car rallyU.S. lawmakers are considering bailing out the Big 3 automakers, the same automakers who have aggressively lobbied against higher gas mileage standards for years and who (surprise!) are on the verge of economic collapse.

On Friday, Dec. 5th, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network will host the largest, funnest parade ever of hybrid car drivers in America. If you own a Prius or other hybrid, join us for a lunchtime caravan around the U.S. Capitol building. We’ll decorate our cars with our message to Congress: No Detroit bailout without a serious commitment to the fuel efficient cars of the future!

Will you join us? Will you tell a friend? We just need one hour of your time — and your beautiful car — at lunchtime. Sign up now>>

The Big Three have spent years lobbying heavily against increases in fuel efficiency. They are even suing California, Maryland and many other states that have passed clean cars legislation requiring more efficient, less polluting vehicles.

In an era of rapid global warming, one in which $4-a-gallon gas is a not-too-distant memory, it’s time for Detroit to get serious about fuel efficiency, not just for the sake of the climate but also because investing in fuel efficiency is the only way to save the Big 3.

Americans are demanding clean cars. Join us on December 5th to show Detroit that the technology to make fuel efficient cars exists – we’re driving it!

High-Tech, High-Income, High-Polluting Virginia

Article by Mike Tidwell, published in the Washington Post

Sunday, November 2, 2008; B08

Mention the words “Northern Virginia” and the hyphenated adjectives come to mind: fast-growing, high-tech, well-educated, high-income. Fairfax County has a higher percentage of high-tech workers than Silicon Valley. No wonder the presidential candidates can’t seem to stay away.

So here’s the surprising question for every Northern Virginia voter: Why is this high-tech region, so dedicated to a “knowledge-based” economy, utterly dependent on an energy system as old as the Confederate States of America? Northern Virginia gets the lion’s share of its electric power not from wind turbines or solar farms but from coal: a shocking 1,180,400 tons of raw coal each year, nearly half of the region’s total load. And it’s not “clean coal” or “high-tech” coal. Just black, sooty, “rip it from the ground and set it on fire” coal. You’d think it would be different. You’d think Northern Virginia would be a leader in developing clean, sustainable energy at a level equal to its high-tech, high-education status.

You’d think.

Thank you for a great DC Green Jobs event!

The DC Get Going Go Green Green Jobs Now event that was hosted in Anacostia, Washington DC was great. As a partner of 1 Sky, Green for All, and Al Gore’s We Can Solve it’s, National Day of Action, we were able to educate, encourage and empower DC low-income residents, ex-offenders, faith-based communities as well as uniting a broad range of communities to promote the creation of a strong green economy.

We enjoyed speeches by National leaders such as Van Jones, President of Green for All, local leaders such as Councilmember Mary Cheh, Harriet Tregoing, Director of DC office of Planning, George Hawkins, Director of the DC Department of the Environment, and more. The entire community enjoyed the Green jobs Now rally, free food, Go-Go music, the art contest, free music and service project, where the community cleaned, re-mulched trees, and planted flowers at the Malcolm X Park on Martin Luther King, Jr Avenue and Malcolm X Avenue, Southeast.

Thanks to all of our participants and volunteers, because with out their help and contribution, we will not be able to create a strong green economy, which will help the planet and the people.

The Green Jobs Day of Action in Anacostia was just the beginning. Please feel free to get in touch with Nydria Humphries, the day of action organizer, and the green jobs coordinator for DC.

An exciting mini-update on DC legislation

On July 1st, the DC City Council voted unanimously to pass the Clean and Affordable Energy Act out of first reading! In practical terms, this means that the bill is not yet a law – it still has to get voted through the council twice more, and then signed by Mayor Fenty.

More info can be found in this press release from Friends of the Earth. (this also includes links to the legislation itself, for all the policy wonks out there)

The City Council broadcasts its meetings live, so I managed to catch the tail-end of the debate on the bill. The “debate” I saw consisted of Councilmember Jim Graham holding up petition signatures he had received in support of the bill – a petition that someone with the Mt Pleasant Solar Coop had left on their own front porch, and had their neighbors come over to sign at their leisure. He was particularly impressed with the fact that people had exerted the extra effort of walking to visit a neighbor to show support for the legislation – so major props to grassroots climate action taking hold in DC!
